Wineries in San Martin, CA: Our Guide to South Valley Wine Country

San Martin's wine scene has turned into one of our favorite reasons to stay local. We're not talking about wine snobs here. We're talking about comfortable afternoons with good people, views that make you pause mid-sip, and wines that taste like they belong exactly where they're made.

San Martin is an unincorporated community in Santa Clara County, nestled in the heart of the Santa Clara Valley wine region. What started as a Wine Trail in 2014 has grown to include over 30 wineries within just 15 minutes of each other. That's a lot of reasons to spend a weekend exploring.

What Makes San Martin Wine Country Special

Here's what we've learned after spending way too many Saturday afternoons in this corner of the South Valley. The wineries here feel genuinely local. You're not paying for a brand or a fancy building. You're paying for the wine, the view, and usually someone's actual family story.

The Santa Clara Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) has been producing wine for generations. This isn't new territory. But somehow it stayed under the radar for years while everyone else was headed north to Napa. That's changing now, and honestly, we prefer it while it's still relaxed.

The weather works here. Spring comes early, summers are warm but not scorching, and there's enough maritime influence from the bay to keep things interesting. The eastern foothills of San Martin have a particular kind of beauty, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns everything golden.

Must-Visit Wineries in San Martin

Miramar Vineyards is where we usually start our day. Ten pastoral acres in the eastern foothills with panoramic views that stretch on forever. They've got bocce ball, corn hole, Jenga. The comfort level is exactly right. You can sit in good outdoor seating without feeling like you're being watched to buy more wine. The vineyard itself has this unhurried feel that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.

Little Uvas Vineyards (LUV) is run by Rosy and Rich Bergen, who owned Rosy's at the Beach restaurant for over 25 years. They know hospitality. Their 2020 Merlot took Double Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and the 2021 Barbera earned Gold too. But more than the awards, they're just nice people pouring good wine. That matters.

CordeValle Winery offers something different with their 150-acre vineyard. Five-wine flights, picnic-friendly patios, bocce games, and they host summer concerts that bring the whole community in. It's a place where you can settle in for a full afternoon and not feel rushed.

Lion Ranch is right there, just a mile off Highway 101. Open Friday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Easy to get to, easy to enjoy.

DeRose Vineyards opened their second tasting room in San Martin in 2022, which tells you something about how the wine scene here is expanding.

We'd also point you toward Guglielmo Winery over in Morgan Hill (nearby enough). They've been doing this since 1925. Four generations of Italian family winemaking. That kind of continuity means something.

Planning Your San Martin Wine Trail Experience

If you're thinking about making a day of it, the Morgan Hill Wine Trolley connects the wineries and makes the whole experience easier. Fifteen wineries within 15 minutes of downtown. With a Trail Pass valid at 30 participating wineries, you can plan a route that actually makes sense instead of driving in circles.

Our typical strategy is two wineries in the morning, lunch somewhere in between (we have a running list of recommendations if you want them), and maybe one more in the late afternoon. That's it. You'll taste enough wine to have opinions about wine. You'll get hungry. And you'll be back home before you're exhausted.

The best time to visit is spring (April through May) or fall (September through October). The weather's perfect, the crowds aren't ridiculous yet, and the light for photos is stunning. Summer works too, just bring water and sunscreen.

Why We Keep Coming Back

What keeps us driving back to San Martin's wineries isn't complicated. It's the combination of genuinely good wine, real people running small operations, and views that make you remember why you love living in the South Valley. There's no pretense here. Just good wine in a pretty place.

The wineries are family-run more often than not. The owners actually show up. The tasting room staff can tell you stories about why they chose these grapes, how they're approaching the vintage. It feels less like commerce and more like sharing something you've worked hard to create.

Plus, and we say this with full honesty, the convenience is hard to beat. We're not driving two hours north. We're taking a scenic route through wine country and being back home in time for dinner. That's the South Valley advantage right there.
