Sharks Ice Gilroy: What's Happening With the Ice Rink Project (2026 Update)

For the past few years, one of the most talked-about projects in Gilroy has been Sharks Ice, a 100,000-square-foot ice sports complex backed by the San Jose Sharks. It's been through design reveals, city council votes, and a public excitement cycle that's hard to match in the South Valley.

But the project has also hit a real financial snag. Here's where things stand as of April 2026.

Project: Sharks Ice Gilroy
Size: ~100,000 sq ft, two levels
Location: Gilroy Sports Park, Monterey Road, south Gilroy
Features: Two NHL-sized ice rinks, spectator seating, restaurant, snack bar, training rooms, conditioning area, pro shop, multi-purpose rooms
Original target: Fall 2026 opening
Current status: Active, but working through a funding gap caused by rising construction costs

What happened with the budget

Construction costs rose faster than the original estimates anticipated. That's been the story across California for the past two years, and Sharks Ice wasn't spared. A funding gap opened up between what the project was budgeted for and what contractors are actually bidding.

In early 2026, City of Gilroy staff and San Jose Sharks Sports & Entertainment officials met to discuss how to close the gap. The City Council formed an ad hoc committee to evaluate the project's financial feasibility. Both sides are actively looking at solutions, including revised financing, phased construction, and potential additional funding sources.

Nobody has pulled the plug. But the original Fall 2026 opening timeline is almost certainly delayed.

What the facility would look like

The design was unveiled in May 2024, and it's a serious facility. Two NHL-regulation ice rinks stacked in a two-level building. The ground floor has the main rink with spectator seating, plus locker rooms and training areas. The upper level has the second rink, multi-purpose rooms, a restaurant, and a snack bar overlooking the ice.

The building sits at the Gilroy Sports Park on Monterey Road, which already has fields and facilities used by the community. Sharks Ice would be the anchor for a broader sports and recreation hub on the south end of town.

For context, the Sharks already operate Sharks Ice facilities in San Jose and Fremont. The Gilroy location would serve the entire South County, pulling in hockey leagues, figure skating, public sessions, and events that currently don't have a venue south of San Jose.

Why it matters for Gilroy

Gilroy doesn't have a major indoor recreation or entertainment facility right now. The closest ice rink is in San Jose. Families drive 30 to 45 minutes for hockey practice, skating lessons, and weekend open skate. A local facility changes that equation.

There's an economic argument too. A 100,000-square-foot complex with a restaurant and pro shop brings jobs, foot traffic to surrounding businesses, and a reason for people from neighboring cities to drive to Gilroy on a Tuesday night rather than just passing through on 101.

The city's $413 million budget for the current cycle includes investment in the ice rink alongside infrastructure and parks projects, signaling that city leadership sees this as a priority even with the cost challenges.

What we're watching

The ad hoc committee meetings are the place where the real decisions will happen. We're tracking those and will report on any movement, whether it's a revised timeline, new funding, or a scope change.

If you want to stay updated, the City of Gilroy posts occasional updates on their Gilroy Ice Center project page. The Gilroy Dispatch has also been covering the financial discussions closely.

We'll update this post as news breaks. The project isn't dead, but it's in the phase where the numbers have to work before the concrete gets poured.
