Morgan Hill Wineries and Tasting Rooms: Your Guide to Santa Clara Valley Wine Country

15 wineries within 15 minutes of downtown Morgan Hill. Our guide to tasting rooms, the Wine Trolley, and the Santa Clara Valley wine trail.

People drive past Morgan Hill on Highway 101 to get to Paso Robles or Napa. We get it. Those are famous wine regions. But there are 15 wineries within 15 minutes of downtown Morgan Hill, and most of them pour for a fraction of what you'd pay in wine country up north. The lines are shorter, the tasting rooms are friendlier, and you can bring your dog to most of them.

We've been working our way through the local wine scene since we moved here. Here's what we've found.

The Big Picture: Santa Clara Valley Wine Country

Morgan Hill, San Martin, and Gilroy sit in the Santa Clara Valley AVA, one of the oldest wine-growing regions in California. Grapes have been planted here since the 1800s. The valley's warm days, cool nights, and well-drained soils produce wines that hold their own against more famous regions, especially the reds.

About 30 wineries participate in the Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail, and you can pick up a year-long Wine Trail Pass that gets you tastings at all of them. If you're the type who likes to collect stamps and keep track, this is a solid move.

What to Watch for When Visiting Morgan Hill Wineries

Weekday visits are quieter

Most tasting rooms here are emptier Wednesday through Friday afternoons. If you can swing a weekday outing instead of a weekend, you'll practically have the place to yourself, and the staff has more time to talk about the wines.

Dress code is casual, reservations optional

Most tasting rooms here are casual. Jeans and sneakers, no reservations needed at most spots. This isn't Napa. You're not going to feel underdressed. Many rooms are dog-friendly and kid-tolerant, which matters if you're doing a family outing instead of a date. Guglielmo and Clos LaChance both have enough outdoor space that kids can run around while you finish your flight.

Plan a south-to-north route

If you're planning a multi-winery day, start south in San Martin (Clos LaChance, Lion Ranch, Miramar) and work your way north toward Morgan Hill (Guglielmo, Castillo's). That keeps you moving in one direction instead of zigzagging. Spring is a gorgeous time to visit. The vines are leafing out, the hills are green, and the tasting rooms get more foot traffic as the weather warms.
