You don't need to spend money to have a solid weekend in Morgan Hill or Gilroy. You need to know where to look and when to show up.

Here's what we actually do when we're not splurging.

Farmers Markets (Free to Attend)

Downtown Morgan Hill: Every Saturday, 9 AM to 1 PM, Third Street at Depot

Gilroy: Check current schedule with city

Walk through. Look at produce. Talk to farmers. Buy something if you want. The entry and browsing is entirely free. You're exposed to actual farmers and actual agriculture without paying anything. It's community. It costs nothing to show up.

Trails and Parks: The Actual Free Recreation

Henry Coe State Park: This is the heavyweight option. Over 87,000 acres of open space in the Diablo Range, accessible from Morgan Hill via Ponderosa Road. Free parking. Free entry. Trails ranging from easy to seriously difficult. You can do 2 miles or 10 miles depending on your fitness and time. Water and supplies: bring your own. Shade exists but not everywhere. Go early. Spring and fall are best (summer gets hot, winter can be muddy). This is where people hike. Seriously hike. Not walk around the block. Actually get out into landscape.

Christmas Hill Park: Downtown Morgan Hill, accessible, free. Smaller park with decent trails. Good for a 30-minute to 1-hour walk with views across the valley.

Coyote Creek Trail: A multi-use trail along the creek that's actually accessible and well-maintained. Start from various access points. Good for walkers, runners, people on bikes.

Uvas Creek Trail: Similar to Coyote Creek. Creek-side walking and hiking. Spring is best when there's actual water moving. Good for longer walks.

Downtown Walking and Exploring

Downtown Morgan Hill: Third Street doesn't cost money to walk down. Window shop. Look at storefronts. Walk into galleries and museums. Some have free hours or free admission. The Morgan Hill Historical Museum has free or very-low-cost admission. Walk into local coffee shops and buy something small just to sit. That's not free, but it's inexpensive. The vibe of downtown is actually walkable and pleasant. No entry fee for that.

Downtown Gilroy: Similar to Morgan Hill. Less developed as a downtown, but improving. Walk around. Explore. Find places you didn't know existed.

Seasonal Community Events

Sidewalk Saturdays (Morgan Hill, seasonal): When they happen, Sidewalk Saturdays fill downtown with vendors, live music, food trucks. Free to attend. You'll spend money if you want food, but walking around is free.

Friday Night Music (Morgan Hill, summer): Summer evenings, downtown Morgan Hill often features outdoor live music. Free to attend. Bring a blanket, sit down, listen. Bring a drink from home or buy something local. Check Morgan Hill Parks & Recreation or the Chamber of Commerce for current schedule.

Winery Visits (Tasting Fees Apply, But You Can Browse for Free)

Some wineries have free tasting or minimal tasting fees during certain hours. Others charge $15-25. If you want to visit without tasting, most wineries don't mind if you walk around the grounds or browse the sales room without committing to a full tasting. Call ahead and ask about their policy. Many will accommodate people who just want to see the property. This is not completely free, but it's lower-cost than a full tasting experience.

Library Programs

Both Morgan Hill and Gilroy public libraries run free programs: author talks, movie screenings, classes, kids' story times. These are legitimately free. Check morgan-hill.ca.us/library or gilroyca.gov/library for current schedules.

Community Events

Throughout the year, Morgan Hill and Gilroy host seasonal events: Mushroom Mardi Gras (Morgan Hill, spring) with free admission, Gilroy Garlic Festival (Gilroy, July) with free admission (food costs money), and various summer concerts and street fairs. These events usually have free admission with optional spending on food and merchandise.

Building a Free Weekend

Here's what a $0-$20 weekend actually looks like:

Saturday Morning (Free): Farmers market at 9 AM (browse, maybe buy $8 worth of strawberries). Walk around downtown Morgan Hill. Browse a gallery or museum.

Saturday Afternoon (Free): Drive to a trailhead (free parking). 2-3 hour hike. Return to town.

Saturday Evening (Optional, ~$10-15): Coffee at Blvd ($5). Dinner from a food truck at a community event or farmers market vendors (~$8-12).

Sunday (Free): Walk through Gilroy downtown. Explore a different neighborhood. Sit in a park with a book.

Total cost: $0-20. You've had a full weekend.

The Actual Point

What makes Morgan Hill and Gilroy interesting isn't always expensive. It's walkable. It's accessible. It's agricultural. It's community-connected. Free weekends don't mean boring weekends. They mean paying attention to what's actually around you. That's usually better than whatever you would've paid for.

Practical Notes

What to Bring: Water bottle. Sunscreen. Hat. Walking shoes. Phone for photos. That's it.

When to Go: Early mornings beat crowds and heat. Saturday is busier than Sunday. Weekend weather matters more than you'd think.

Bring Kids? Yes. Most of what we've listed is kid-friendly. They'll walk, they'll explore, they'll learn.

Bring Friends? Yes. That's actually the point. Doing stuff together costs nothing extra and matters more.
