The number one question people ask when they're considering Morgan Hill or Gilroy is about the commute. Not "what are the schools like" or "what's the downtown like." The commute. Because if you work in San Jose or further north, that drive on 101 is the thing that either works for you or it doesn't.

We've done the drive. We've ridden Caltrain. We've tried every workaround. Here's what's real.

The 101 drive: what to expect

Morgan Hill to downtown San Jose via 101 North: 22 miles. Google Maps says 25 minutes without traffic. That estimate is accurate at 6:00 AM or 9:30 PM.

During morning rush (7:00 to 8:30 AM), expect 40 to 55 minutes. The worst bottleneck is the merge from 101 to 85/87 interchange near Bernal Road. Traffic stacks up south of there, sometimes all the way back to Cochrane Road.

Coming home in the evening (4:30 to 6:30 PM), southbound 101 clogs between the 85 merge and Coyote Valley. Same stretch, reverse direction. 40 to 60 minutes is normal. On Fridays before long weekends, add another 15 minutes.

From Gilroy, add 10 to 15 minutes each way. That extra 10 miles between Gilroy and Morgan Hill is mostly open freeway, but it adds up over a year.

Caltrain

The Morgan Hill station is at Butterfield Boulevard and Main Avenue. The Gilroy station is the southern terminus at Monterey Road near 10th Street.

Morning trains depart Gilroy around 5:30 AM, 6:00 AM, and 6:40 AM, with Morgan Hill pickups about 8 minutes later. The ride to San Jose Diridon takes roughly 30 minutes from Morgan Hill, 38 minutes from Gilroy.

Northbound service is limited. There are typically 3 to 4 morning trains and 3 to 4 evening return trains. This isn't Bay Area Rapid Transit frequency. If you miss your train, you wait.

Monthly pass from Morgan Hill to San Jose Zone 6: approximately $150. From Morgan Hill to San Francisco (Zone 1): approximately $400.

The trade-off: you can read, sleep, or work on the train. That's 45 to 60 minutes of productive time versus white-knuckling through Coyote Valley. A lot of people we know consider the commute time a wash because the train time is usable and the driving time isn't.

Parking at Morgan Hill station is free. The lot fills up by 7:00 AM on weekdays.

The Monterey Road alternative

When 101 is bad (accidents, construction, random slowdowns), locals take Monterey Road. It runs parallel to the freeway from Gilroy through Morgan Hill, through Coyote, and into south San Jose.

The drive is slower by default: 35 to 40 minutes to San Jose without traffic, with stoplights. But when 101 is at a standstill, Monterey Road moves.

The catch: Monterey Road through Coyote Valley has a 45 mph speed limit and is heavily patrolled. Don't treat it like a freeway.

The 101 to 85 split

If your job is in Cupertino, Sunnyvale, or Mountain View, you'll take 101 North to 85 North. The 101/85 interchange is the single worst bottleneck for Morgan Hill commuters. It backs up every morning, every evening.

Alternative: take 101 North to Bailey Avenue, cut west through San Jose neighborhoods to Almaden Expressway, then north. It's slower on paper but sometimes faster in practice. Local knowledge pays off here.

If your job is in north San Jose or Milpitas, 101 North all the way is your only real option. Budget the full hour.

The numbers that matter

Round trip from Morgan Hill to downtown San Jose: 44 miles.

Gas cost per day at $4.40/gallon and 25 mpg: approximately $7.75.

Monthly gas cost (22 workdays): approximately $170.

Add wear and tear ($0.15/mile): another $145/month.

Total driving commute cost: approximately $315/month.

Compare to Caltrain monthly pass: $150 from Morgan Hill. Half the cost, but constrained by the schedule.

The hybrid calculation

Here's where South Valley really starts making sense. If you commute to San Jose three days a week instead of five, the monthly driving cost drops to about $190. The time in the car drops by 40%. And you still get the house, the yard, the schools, and the downtown farmers market.

The pandemic didn't create hybrid work, but it made Morgan Hill and Gilroy viable options for a lot of people who never would have considered them before. We meet people every week who moved here specifically because they only need to be in an office two or three days.

At three days per week, the commute from Morgan Hill is roughly equivalent to commuting from east San Jose to Palo Alto five days a week. The difference is what you get to come home to.

What we'd tell someone deciding

If you commute to San Jose five days a week: Morgan Hill works, but the drive will be part of your identity. Budget the time and the gas honestly. Consider Caltrain seriously.

If you commute three days a week or less: Morgan Hill is one of the best values in the Bay Area. The commute days are manageable. The non-commute days are exceptional.

If you commute to anywhere north of Sunnyvale: Think hard. The drive from Morgan Hill to Palo Alto or Redwood City is 45 minutes without traffic and 75 to 90 minutes with traffic. That's a lot. Caltrain helps but the ride is long.

If you work in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, or remote: You already won. Enjoy it.
